Firms honored for best in-mold decorations

The In-Mold Decorating Association of Scottsdale has announced the winners of the third annual IMDA Awards Competition, selecting the best if 47 entries from 17 companies around the world:

Best IMD Durable Product, to Polisport of Portugal for a front fender for a dirt bike that provides the look of brushed metal. The judges called it an innovative use of polypropylene substrate overmolded on the front half with the brushed metal-look PP.

Honorable Mention — IMD Durable Product, to Inland Label and Marketing Services LLC of La Crosse, Wis., which worked with molder Technimark LLC of Asheboro, N.C., and LCR Hallcrest for a process using thermochromatic inks (temperature-activated color changing) for an injection molded thermo cup.

Best Injection Molded Part, to Polisport for dirt bike hand protectors using two-shot injection molding to make high-gloss, decorated parts from PP.

Best Label Design, to label producer Smyth Co.s Inc. of St. Paul, Minn., and molder Technimark, for an IML molded cup that to mimic a traditional glass Coca-Cola bottle.

Honorable Mention — Label Design, to Arta Plast AB of Tyreso, Sweden, for an unside down package that allows the bottom of the package to be used as a serving tray for liver pate. A patented 2-Seal technology for the package to be sealed using the in-mold label on the bottom tray as the sealing mechanism, without an extra foil or membrane.

Best Product Family, to StackTeck  Systems Inc. of Brampton, Ontario, to movie theme cups and buckets

Honorable Mention — Product Family, to StackTeck for a margarine package featuring technical, functional and beautiful design.

Best Thin Wall Packaging, to Union Street Brand Packaging of Northborough, Mass., for Clorox Decor disinfecting wipes, molded by Nypro Inc. The judges said the full-wrap IML gives a seamless look by maintaining a consistent profile from the canister side walls to the cover.
