Market Brief:
In recent years China's die & mould industry maintains fast development. In spite of the impact of the world financial crisis, the total sales revenue of China's die & mould in 2008 still reached RMB95 billion, or USD14 billion, growing by 9% over 2007. China's exports of die & mould soared by 36% over 2007, to USD1.922 billion. China's imports of die & mould reached USD2.004 billion, about the same as 2007 level. China??s mould-making technology has also achieved great improvement over the past years, with some technology reaching or approaching the world level. The total imports and exports of China's die & mould in the 1st half of 2009 amounted to USD1.913 billion (USD1.033 billion of imports and USD880 million of exports). Compared with the same period in 2008, the total imports and exports reduced by 3.53% (exports grew by 1.38% and imports reduced by 7.35%). Though the total imports and exports reduced, the exports of die & mould kept growing against the shrinking global demand for die & mould and China's die & mould industry maintains strong competitiveness. In the coming years of 2009 and 2010, with the stimulation of domestic demand and the advantage of cost efficiency that features China's die & mould in the international sourcing, it is expected that China's die & mould industry will continue to grow substantially. All the above factors will create for China a greater demand for advanced processing equipment, manufacturing software and cutting tools.

China has always attached great importance to the development of die & mould and its processing technology and equipment. In the past 20 years, die & mould and its processing technology and equipment are placed in the "Catalogue of Industries, Products and Technologies that China Encourages to Develop" and also in the "Catalogue of Industries that China Encourages Foreign Investors to Enter". In the "Adjustment and Revitalization Plan of Equipment Manufacturing Industry" and "Adjustment and Revitalization Plan of Automotive Industry" that the State Council has recently issued, the enhancement of mould-making technology and equipment is listed as one of the priorities.

In 2008 the investment in the added fixed asset by China's die & mould industry reached tens of billion RMB yuan, of which the investment in processing equipment takes a great proportion. A research into China's key die & mould enterprises demonstrates that introducing advanced CNC machining center, CNC milling machine, precision EDM, precision grinding machine and precision measuring system is the priority of enterprise technological reform. Another research into over a thousand CDMIA members demonstrates that the equipment improvement and the sourcing of precision cutting tools, precision EDM machines and CAD/CAM/CAE is still the hotspot of enterprise demand.

China continued to be the world's biggest consumer and importer of machine tools in 2008, with a sales revenue of USD19.4 billion, of which die & mould industry accounted for one tenth. The imports of machine tools amounted to USD12.1 billion. The trend that die & mould industry will import a great number of machine tools will be sustained.

Forming machine and equipment also develop in step with mould-making, and the sourcing of precision plastics machinery and CNC forging equipment by die & mould enterprises will continue to increase.

China Die & Mould Industry Association (CDMIA) has presently over 1,500 group members and it is the sole national association in China??s die and mould industry.
